Course Overview and Design |
AP World History course is a college level class designed to cover a variety of historical concepts. Content and instruction will emphasize “patterns of change” and the connectivity between cultures and their relation to historical change and continuity from 8000 B.C.E. to the present. This course is designed to increase student ability to analyze historical evidence and show valid associations between thematic and chronological guidelines. Activities will include primary source analysis, thesis and essay writing practice, causation commentary, and global connectivity evaluations.
Who should take the course?
AP World History is offered to all students at Jurupa Hills High School. The school has an open enrollment policy and encourages all interested students to experience this college-level course. Informally, the primary prerequisites are motivation, time, devotion, and willingness to read, write, and think critically as well as extensively. The purpose of the course, however, extends beyond the possibility of earning college credit by providing students with the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge that will form a useful foundation for college studies.
Student Attendance, Organization, Performance and Evaluation
Students who take this course should realize that AP courses are taught and graded based upon college-level expectations; they significantly exceed the demands and expectations for typical high school courses. You will need to read a minimum of 20 pages per class, and there is NO substitute for this. There are online summaries of the chapters-please don't use them to cut corners, these should be used ONLY as supplements. Although there are certainly several other aspects of preparation that will enhance learning and understanding, the single most important ingredient to remedy low grades and low performance is to read. You MUST read to be prepared. Likewise, attending class is essential. Lectures will be designed to augment the readings, not just "go over" them. Tests, quizzes, and essays will be drawn from everything we do: readings, lectures, class activities, etc. In other words, just because the teacher didn't mention something in class doesn't mean it won't be evaluated.
